Drawing with Pattern

Playing around by overlaying pattern on top of an image, I produced an interesting idea that would open up the use of more of my archive photos. Here I used a photo of noodles to disrupt a portrait. Wanting to see how this would work with a drawn portrait I decided to print the pattern and then draw in the face. As I was only testing this idea, I kept the drawn portrait simple, but reflected on it as a more finished piece.

  • To balance out the printed pattern with the drawn portrait, the drawn portrait would need to have a high contrast. I could use alcohol markers as a bas to help with this.

  • Although the printed pattern is interesting, I am not sure about the harsh edges that it has. These harsh edges make it look too out of place and not cohesive with the drawing. I would need to blur/feather the edges of the pattern to blend both the pattern and drawn face together.

  • The contrast and the saturation of the printed pattern is overly strong. I would look at toning this down if this process is used again in the future.

  • Instead of printing the pattern, how would it look if it was drawn? Would this help it be more cohesive with the drawn face or would it become too soft? Regarding this pattern (noodles), what process would I use to draw it?

  • I find it effective having the two components of this work, one being in colour and the other in greyscale. With this in mind could I utilise the Samoiloff effect, edging my work back toward the intersection between digital and drawn? Could this help link the ideas around abnormal facial recognition?
