Lily Van Der Stokker

I have had a look at Lily Van Der Stokkers' large-scale wall paintings and installations. Her work uses bright pastel colours, simple shapes, decorative patterns, everyday objects and handwritten text. Her work appears playful and somewhat decorative, yet very effective and eye-catching.
I find it interesting in how she brings things that are normally considered ordinary or unimporatant into the gallery. She looks like she often uses ideas around domestic life, cleaning, family, money and everyday routines. These subjects are presented in a cheerful and colourful way, which makes them feel slightly strange when placed inside a gallery space. I also find it interesting how her drawings/paintings become part of the architecture. Instead of simply hanging a drawing on the wall, the wall itself becomes part of the work. Her work moves from being on her chosen objects, and extends out onto the wall, almost camouflaging the objects; the objects become part of the structure. This extension can cover large areas of a room and change how the space looks and feels.
