Using this work by Laith McGregor, I wanted to recreate his use of linear lines on my own work.

Using drawings from my previous body of work that were put aside, I set about drawing over the top. I wanted to start with these drawings as I wanted to see how the strong linear lines, and the soft drawing would work together. I also tested two mediums to create the lines—biro and pencil. Rather than using a blue biro/pencil, which McGregor uses. in his own work, I used a black biro and a mid toned grey pencil as that was all I had on hand at the time.

Looking at these drawings I can clearly see that the pencil marks (left) are softer than the biro marks (right), although the biro marks are much cleaner. The drawings in the background do get lost behind the lines due to them being so soft. When thinking about this pattern in a contextual manner, I think about brain wiring and connections but in a more structural, constructed way. This makes me curious to see what it would look like with a pattern on top of my more detailed and high contrast drawings.

When thinking about the lines as a pattern, I will be going back to my archive of photos to pull out different patterns that I see. I could then use these as overlays.
